How to Freeze Bread One Slice at a Time

For plain bread, slice the cooled loaf and separate the slices before freezing. A few squares of parchment let you take one piece for breakfast without thawing the whole loaf.

Cool and portion the loaf

Let freshly baked bread cool completely. Cut slices that fit comfortably in your toaster. If you normally use two slices at once, portion them in pairs. For individual slices, tuck a square of baking parchment between each pair of neighbouring slices.

Press the air out of the bag

Put the portions in a sealable freezer bag and press out excess air without crushing the bread. Seal the bag and label it with the type of bread and the date. Lay it flat so the slices stay neatly stacked.

Common questions

Can you toast bread straight from frozen?

Yes. A plain slice that fits easily in the toaster can go in frozen. Start with your usual setting and add a little time if needed. Reseal the bag and put the remaining slices back in the freezer.

How do you thaw bread for a soft sandwich?

Transfer only the slices you need to a small sealed bag and leave them at room temperature until pliable. Thicker slices take longer.

If you bake your own loaves, try the same method with this homemade sourdough bread.
