How to Tare a Kitchen Scale

Taring subtracts the weight of the bowl from the reading. Put the empty bowl on the scale, press Tare or Zero, and add the ingredient once the display reads 0 g.

How do you weigh two ingredients in one bowl?

Set the scale on a hard, level counter and select grams. Center the bowl and zero it. For example, add 200 g flour, zero the display again, then add 50 g sugar. The screen shows the last 50 g, while the bowl contains 250 g of ingredients.

When is a separate bowl useful?

If you pour too much liquid into flour, it is difficult to take back out. When overshooting would matter, weigh the liquid in a separate bowl. Taring also leaves the physical load on the scale: count the bowl and every ingredient against its capacity.

Common questions

Why is the reading negative when I lift the bowl?

Removing part or all of the weight the scale treated as zero can give a negative reading. Clear the platform and zero the display before starting over.

Does taring convert cups to grams?

No. Taring takes the container out of the reading. If your recipe uses cups, find the ingredient in the kitchen measurement conversion guide first.
