Slice the tomatoes and mozzarella to a similar thickness. If the tomatoes are very juicy, blot them briefly with a paper towel.
Lay the slices on a serving plate, alternating tomato and mozzarella. Tuck basil leaves in between.
In a small bowl, whisk olive oil with vinegar and, if using, red wine. Season with salt and pepper.
Drizzle the dressing over the salad. Let it sit for 5 minutes so the flavors come together, then serve right away.
