Irish Dark Soda Bread Recipe (Quick Brown Soda Bread)
Irish dark soda bread recipe: a no-yeast quick bread that rises with baking soda and baking powder. You’ll mix the dry ingredients, stir in buttermilk, shape the loaf gently, and bake until set. Slice it for breakfast, serve it with soup, or use it for simple sandwiches.
Ingredients
1. Dry ingredients
2. Wet ingredients
Step-by-Step Method
Preheat and prep
Heat the oven to 190°C / 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment or lightly flour it so the dough won’t stick.
Combine the dry mix
In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking soda, baking powder, and brown sugar until evenly blended.
Stir in buttermilk
Pour in the buttermilk and stir with a spoon or spatula just until the dough comes together. Don’t overmix; keeping it gentle helps the crumb stay tender.
Shape the loaf
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and form a round loaf. Score a deep cross on top so it bakes evenly and opens up nicely.
Bake
Place on the prepared sheet and bake for 45 minutes, until the top is darkened and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped underneath.
Cool and slice
Let it cool on a rack for 10–15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
