Empanadas de Honoro Recipe (Beef Turnovers)
Empanadas de Honoro recipe: a lemon-and-lime seasoned beef filling cooked with onions and warm spices, wrapped in a simple homemade dough, then baked until lightly golden. In the “how to make” steps, you’ll see quick tips like resting the dough and sealing the edges so they don’t open in the oven.
Ingredients
1. For the dough
2. For the filling
Step-by-Step Method
Mix the dough
Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the egg, milk, and shortening, then knead until smooth and soft but not sticky. Cover and rest for 15 minutes.
Cook the beef and onions
Heat olive oil in a skillet. Sauté the onion until translucent. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned and the liquid cooks off.
Season the filling
Stir in paprika, chili powder, cumin, and oregano. Pour in the lemon and lime juice. Cook 2–3 minutes more, then let the mixture cool slightly so it’s easier to fill.
Roll and cut
Preheat the oven to 200°C / 400°F. Roll the dough out thinly and cut medium circles with a cutter or glass.
Fill and seal
Spoon filling into the center of each circle. Add a little chopped egg, a few olive slices, and a pinch of raisins. Lightly moisten the edges, fold into a half-moon, and crimp firmly with a fork.
Bake
Arrange on a parchment-lined tray. Bake 20–25 minutes, until lightly golden. Rest 5 minutes before serving so the filling settles.
