Step-by-Step Method
Prepare the oven
Preheat the oven to 220°C. Cover the tray with baking paper or lightly oil it.
Mix the dry ingredients
Mix flour, baking powder, sugar and salt briefly in a large bowl.
Mix the oil into the flour
Add shortening. Crumble the flour mixture with your fingertips or a pastry cutter until it resembles sand; Remaining large pieces keeps the tissue soft.
Add the milk and gather the dough
Pour in the milk and mix with a spatula. Stop when the dough has just come together; Don't knead too much. If it remains dry, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of milk.
Shape and cut
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface. Gently fold and press 2-3 times; Aim for around 2cm thickness. Cut circles with a glass or mold.
Bake
Arrange the biscuits on the tray. Bake for 8 minutes until the tops are lightly browned. Let it rest for 2 minutes when it comes out of the oven.
Serve
Cut it in half while it is hot and serve it with gravy sauce or serve it with butter/honey for breakfast.
