Amish-Style Pot Roast Recipe (Slow-Roasted Beef)
This Amish-style pot roast recipe uses soy sauce, coffee, and simple herbs to slowly braise the beef until it’s tender. The prep is quick, then the oven does the steady, low-heat work. Follow the how-to steps and keep the roast covered so it stays juicy.
Ingredients
1. For the marinade
2. For cooking
Step-by-Step Method
Mix the marinade
In a bowl, stir together the soy sauce, 1 cup warm coffee, dried oregano, and crushed garlic. Drop in the bay leaves and mix again.
Build the base
Spread the onion rings on the bottom of an oven-safe dish or Dutch oven; they add flavor and help prevent sticking.
Add liquids
Pour the marinade over the onions. Add the extra 1/2 cup coffee and 2 tbsp soy sauce. Keep the bay leaves submerged in the liquid.
Slow-roast, covered
Cover tightly with a lid (or foil). Cook in a preheated 160°C / 320°F oven for about 3 hours. Occasionally baste with the pan juices and keep it covered to avoid drying out.
Rest and serve
Remove the bay leaves. Let the roast rest for 10 minutes, then slice and spoon the onion-coffee pan juices over the top.
